It appears that only about 4-6 Super-8 entries made the final 20 winners at the Rutgers "Super-8" Film and Digital Festival, which were selected from over 150 entries.
Besides Super-8 the Rutgers "Super-8" Film & Digital Festival also shows 16mm, Digital-8, and Mini-Dv. That's four different media formats.
And here's the problem. Super-8 films by their very nature do not afford the filmmaker the resources to make the film's soundtrack as sophisticated as in mini-dv.
Super-8 films cost 100 times more per minute to buy the film stock, develop and transfer to video than mini-dv costs, this by it's very nature will hamstring the rest of the films budget and allows for the DV filmmakers to spend next to nothing on acquisition and then focus on making a superb soundtrack.
Those shooting 16mm usually have more of a budget and they too spend more in post production than Super-8mm.
Of course the logical rejoinder is, it doesn't matter what media you shoot your project in, all that matters is how does the audience react to it.
BUT, festivals ARE competitions, and usually competitions clump similar styles of films into similar categories.
A "Super-8" Film Festival that only awards 4-6 Super-8 films is not really a Super-8 film festival. And that is my complaint.
I am here to state that THERE IS NO TRUE SUPER-8 FILM FESTIVAL ANYWHERE IN THE WORLD THAT SHOWS SUPER-8 FILMS PROJECTED DIGITALLY AND ALSO GIVES PRIZES OUT.
NOT ONE!
For shame.
It looks from the Rutgers "Super-8" Film & Digital Festival winners list that the Festival will be showing very good films over three nights, but only a few of those 20 films will be Super-8 films (shown via digital projection).
Super-8 is still a popular medium and deserves to have at least ONE Film Festival somewhere in the world that EXLCUSIVELY shows finished Super-8 projects digitally projected AND also gives out prizes.
I am concerned that Rutgers has grown too big to be a true supporter of Super-8 and has instead is about to usurp the ability of other festivals to be strictly Super-8 because they figure Rutgers has already covered the bases AND has Kodak's support.
